Isaiah 43:2 reassures us, “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
Have you recently experienced the end of a romantic relationship, or perhaps you’ve been dealt the painful blow of a breakup with someone you envisioned spending your life with? During such times, you may have encountered well-intentioned advice like “just get over it” or “it’s been a week; come on, get over it!” Yet, the journey after a relationship concludes is not about leaping over the stages of healing but rather navigating through them. There are various stages to pass through, including shock, anger, denial, regret, and remorse, among others.
It is entirely okay to feel hurt, to shed tears, and even to harbor feelings of anger. Such emotions are an integral part of the healing process, and you require the time to properly grieve this loss. The duration of this process varies from person to person, with statistics indicating that men often move through breakups more swiftly than women. Rushing through these stages can result in negative consequences, such as entering into rebound relationships, carrying bitterness, projecting past hurt onto future partners, and accumulating a reservoir of negative emotions.
The encouraging news is that the Lord has promised to be with you every step of the way. He acknowledged that life would bring trials and tribulations, yet through Him, you will find the strength to conquer. The conclusion of this relationship will not consume you; rather, it will fortify you, enrich your wisdom, and refine your character.
While we may not always comprehend the grand design that God has in store, we can trust in Romans 8:28, which tells us, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” Therefore, it is crucial to emphasize that you should move through this difficult phase, not try to leap over it, and emerge on the other side.
Job 23:10 beautifully captures the essence of this transformative journey: “But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as pure gold.”
In the midst of despair and heartache, remember that you are not alone. God is your constant companion as you walk through the valley of emotional turmoil. Just as He parted the waters for the Israelites and protected them from the fiery furnace, He is shielding you from overwhelming despair and the scorching flames of bitterness.
As you navigate the stages of grief, lean on the wisdom of Ecclesiastes 3:1-4, which reminds us that “To every thing, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” Give yourself permission to grieve, to experience the depths of your emotions, and ultimately, to heal.
While others may urge you to hasten the process, know that it is entirely acceptable to take the time you need. Embrace your humanity, and let God’s promise be your guiding light. You will emerge from this valley stronger, wiser, and more resilient than ever before, just as Job emerged as pure gold from his trials.
Remember the words of Isaiah 43:2: “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee.” With God by your side, you can find solace in the assurance that you will not only survive but thrive in the aftermath of your breakup. Allow this period of healing to mold you into a purer, more refined version of yourself, prepared for the bright future that lies ahead.
