Healing the Break
Giving your heart to someone you love, only to have it broken, is an agonizing experience. Whether it’s betrayal, unfaithfulness, rejection, or being left standing at the altar, the pain is real. The first step to recovery is acknowledging this pain. Heartbreak requires healing, just like a physical wound does.
Turn to God: Begin by seeking God in prayer. Pour out your heart to Him. He’s always there with open arms, ready to mend and safeguard your heart. It’s crucial to allow yourself to feel the raw emotions – anger, tears, guilt, and regret. Bottling it all up and putting on a brave face will only lead to inner turmoil.
Seek Support: Reach out to your parents, family, best friends, or your pastoral team. Surround yourself with people who genuinely love you and want the best for you. When feasible, cut off communication with the person who caused the heartbreak until you’re strong enough to move forward.
Self-Reflection: Consider taking a solo vacation or going with a close friend to gain perspective and break free from your daily routine. Spend time in prayer and in God’s presence where healing can begin. Writing in a journal can also be therapeutic, even if it’s not meant to be sent to the person who broke your heart.
Only God Can Heal: Remember, it’s only God who can heal you, not another relationship. Give yourself time to heal and be fully restored before considering dating again.
Will I Ever Love Again?
Now, after the healing process, you might be wondering if you’ll ever love again. The answer is a resounding “YES.”
Forgiveness is Key: Before you start dating again, ensure that you have genuinely forgiven the person from your past. “Holding onto unforgiveness is like drinking poison waiting for the person to die.” Confess daily that you receive the spirit of love, power, and a sound mind, while rejecting the spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7). Don’t let fear hold you back from welcoming someone new into your life.
Embrace the New: When entering a new relationship, avoid dwelling on the past. If asked about your previous relationship, offer a brief and simple explanation, such as “he/she was unfaithful, but I’ve forgiven and moved on.” At this early stage, there’s no need for details.
Balance is Key: Find a balance between sharing your heart and guarding it. Being too guarded can hinder a new relationship, while being too quick to fall in love may lead to more heartache. Prayerfully consider your new potential mate. The Bible advises testing the spirits to see if they are from God (1 John 4:1), and the Holy Spirit will reveal whether they are worthy of you.
In both the healing and the pursuit of new love, remember the importance of guarding your heart and allowing God’s love to guide your path.
